The IEC/EN 60587 apparatus typically includes the following components and settings:

  • Test Methods: It supports both Method 1 (Constant Tracking Voltage) and Method 2 (Stepwise Tracking Voltage).
  • Voltage Range: Usually adjustable from 100V to 6,000V AC (or up to 11,000 Volts or Customized in some advanced models) with a stability of 
  • Specimen Orientation: Samples are mounted at an inclination of 45° 
     2° from the horizontal.
  • Contaminant Delivery: A liquid contaminant (typically 0.1% Ammonium Chloride with a wetting agent) is fed at precise rates ranging from 0.075 ml/min to 0.900 ml/min, depending on the test voltage.
  • Electrodes: Made of stainless steel (Grade 302), with the top and bottom electrodes spaced 50 mm apart.
  • Safety Features: Includes an earthed safety enclosure, UV-protected glass doors, and overcurrent devices that trip if current exceeds 60 mA for 2–4 seconds
  • Application: Cable Insulation, High voltage
