Flammability

Flammability refers to a material’s ability to burn or ignite, potentially causing fire or combustion. The degree of difficulty in igniting a substance is measured through fire testing, ensuring safety compliance.

UL 94 – Flammability Testing Standard

UL 94 is the internationally recognized safety standard for testing the flammability of plastic materials used in devices and appliances. It evaluates a material’s reaction to flame exposure and determines whether it will self-extinguish or sustain combustion.

Types of UL 94 Tests

1. Material Ignition & Flame Propagation Test – Assesses whether the material self-extinguishes or continues to burn after ignition.
2. Horizontal & Vertical Burning Rate Test – Determines burning speed and flame resistance.

Flame Classifications in UL 94

UL 94 classifies materials based on burning characteristics observed under controlled laboratory conditions. The 12 flame classifications are grouped into three main categories, ranking materials in descending order of flame resistance.
